The Walmart South China Fresh Distribution Center was officially opened for the press. This is the first customized fresh distribution center for Walmart in China. The project investment exceeded 700 million yuan [98 million USD]. This is the largest single investment for Walmart since the company entered China 23 years ago. The center allows stores to reduce their volume of fresh food in storage by more than half.
The distribution center is located in Shatian Village, Dongguan, and covers an area of 95 thousand square meters. This includes the 33.7 thousand square meter storage facility that began operating in March this year. Walmart constructed a large distribution center for dry goods in Shenzhen when the company first entered China. Walmart currently has 18 distribution centers across the country, including 8 dry goods distribution centers and 10 fresh food distribution centers.
There are more than 400 Walmart stores in China, and even the new distribution centers may not be able to meet all the distribution requirements of all Walmart stores.
