Organic vegetables mostly wrapped in plastic

More than 80% of organic fruit and organic vegetables are offered in plastic packaging. Consumer Protection Foundation (SKS) has randomly tested 221 products - including cucumbers, hot peppers and apples - in 10 different stores in Bern and Basel. The SKS noted that the majority of products (54%) are offered in plastic packaging. The share of plastic packaging was especially high for organic vegetables (84%). Less than half of conventional products (44%) were packaged.

Of the stores tested, Coop scored the best. There, only 21% of conventional and 78% of organic products were packaged.

The SKS concludes that retailers offer too few alternatives. For consumers who want to avoid waste and buy organic products, the situation is particularly unsatisfactory.
