Preparations are in full swing for the next strawberry campaign in Southern Italy

"The strawberry campaign has been rather problematic due to a series of issues. Nonetheless, growing strawberries remains a good choice. We are already organizing the sale of plants, which will start in late September. Our markets of reference are central and southern regions from Lazio to Sicily. With around 1400 hectares, strawberry cultivation is one of the most important crops for the entire Mediterranean basin," reports Carmela Suriano, general manager at Planitalia.

"Our strawberries are produced between December and June, which coincides with productions from Spain, Greece, Egypt, Morocco, etc. But our strength is the high-quality of our productions as well as the vast catalog of varieties that can meet various market demands. Those who purchase strawberries from our clients know fully well that consumers prefer Italian produce, i.e. fruit with specific organoleptic qualities that can reach supermarkets in Italy and Europe just a few hours after being harvested."

"Campania and Basilicata are the leading regions when it comes to strawberry cultivation in southern Italy. After transplants are over, we will learn which of the two will be the leading producer for the 2019/20 campaign. Cultivated areas vary every year, usually between 5 and 10%."

FreshPlaza also interviewed Loris Gentile, agronomist and technical manager for Planitalia, for his opinion on the development of plantlets.

"Planitalia introduces new varieties every year. The ideal cultivar must meet both producer and consumer demands. The new interesting solutions are: Plared 0639, Rossetta, Gioelita and Melissa."

"I have just got back from Poland and I can confirm their excellent development as well as the production of stolons by mother plants. In addition, the rooting of new plants is guaranteed by the high quality of the soil and by an excellent water management which maintains soil humidity perfect. A highly-qualified team helps us improve to supply high-quality nursery material."

"Plants are uprooted mechanically with state-of-the-art machines, which can also work in difficult weather conditions while preserving the plants. Harvesting will be carried out in late September, when we are sure plants are fully ripe. Then we will promptly ship bare-rooted fresh plants to southern Italy so that they can be planted."
