The apple and pear production in mainland China suffered from frost and snowfall in 2018 during the period when apple and pear trees are in blossom. The overall production volume declined as a result of these extreme weather conditions and market demand now far exceeds market supply.
The price of apples and pears continues to rise. The Chinese apple and pear markets are under great pressure. This opens up new commercial opportunities for Taiwanese pears in the Chinese fruit market. Mr. Huang of Little Farmer Co., Ltd., a fruit production and trade company from Taiwan, provided his view on this commercial opportunity for Taiwanese pears: "We start selling our pears from Xinxing every year around July. The Xinxing pear is often considered an early-season pear variety. In recent years we only sold our pears in Taiwan. We did not manage to enter the Chinese market. There are several reasons for this situation: Firstly, Taiwanese market demand for this pear variety is huge. Secondly, the price of this pear variety is higher than other varieties because the Xinxing pear is popular in the market and the product quality is high."

"However, the market conditions changed this year. As a result, we are once again selling our pears in the Chinese market after an absence of 3 or 4 years. The Taiwanese company Little Farmer Co., Ltd. has a subsidiary company in China called Xiamen Xing Fresh Fruit Co., Ltd. The subsidiary company is now selling Xinxing pears in China. The parent company in Taiwan produces the pears and then transfers the products to the subsidiary company for retail in the Chinese market."

"The Xinxing pear production volume declined by around 40% in comparison with last year. This immediately influenced the price. The purchase price of Xinxing pears increased by around 20% to 30% in comparison with the same period last year. Despite these developments, the sales conditions for this pear variety remain smooth. The main reason for the popularity of this pear variety is relatively high product quality. The flavor is crisp and not too soft. Taiwanese consumers love this pear variety. Our pears are produced by the farmer's cooperative in Dongshi township, Taizhong. The production season begins in July and continues until October."
