Takii to open breeding station in Murcia in september

"In the long term, we want to become a top-5 player in open field melons"

After more than 7 years based in the Spanish province of Almeria, the Japanese breeding company Takii has also launched a breeding station in Murcia. The new breeding station has 4 hectares of greenhouses and 2 hectares of open ground crops, expecting an increase the surface in coming years. Galia and Piel de Sapo melons and new broccoli varieties are being tested on the new test field. Although the size of the station is relatively small, the ambitions are big. "We want to become a top-5 player in open field melons," says Gabriel Pérez.

Takii has a total of 12 people working for the breeding company in Spain. "We have already rented land before to test our varieties in Murcia, but now we have the opportunity to do it at our own location," said Gabriel. The Japanese breeding company has existed for no less than 185 years and, among other things, it has brought the first hybrid cabbage to the market. "When it comes to open field melons, we are not too big yet, despite being a top 10 player; however, we want to grow. In Almeria, we are actually one of the two largest players working with Galia greenhouse melons with our varieties Bedodoble F1, Buleria F1 and Jaleo F1."

The melon varieties that Takii currently offers for open ground cultivation are the Galia melons Fandango F1 and Cabal F1. They are complemented with the new Klimt F1 variety. "Our Cabal F1 variety is currently recording the strongest growth," said Gabriel Pérez. "It is a uniform melon, always around 1 kilo, which is highly appreciated in Northern Europe. Since this melon can be grown in a number of different areas, including Brazil, Costa Rica and Murcia, it is possible to supply it all year round. With the Klimt F1 we also have a uniform melon of around 1 kilo, with the additional advantage that this melon is also resistant to powdery mildew and aphids."

For the last three years, Takii has also offered broccoli varieties for winter time and new ones will be released in the coming seasons. "Our broccoli varieties stand out for their compact heads. Moreover, they have a great weight and a high production, which is ideal for growers. I dare to say that our varieties yield 10-12% more production than others," says Gabriel.
