Fruit producers in the Mexican state of Coahuila plan to allocate 95 percent of their production to the export market to meet the demand for 12.5 million tons in western United States.
The watermelon harvest, which began 10 days ago and is expected to end in mid-August, is yielding a high production volume and high-quality products thanks to the frosts last winter.
Ricardo Farias, the manager of the Agroproductos Capricho company, said that the watermelon had the biggest production registered; but that they also expected a good onion harvest to cover the national market demand and to export.
He also said that most of the watermelon production was allocated to the export market.
