Genesis Emers, Hagé International:

"Abundant supply, weather not good for Dutch lime market"

The lime market can be characterized as unexpected and unstable. This is according to Genesis Emers of the Dutch Import/Export company, Hagé International. "No year is the same, so there is no real pattern to be discovered. It is, therefore, important to be observant. You must be able to anticipate changes in the market. And respond promptly."

"From December to March, the market was dramatic. Despite the Mexican season coming to an end, prices dropped very low - to around €2,50 per box. The demand for limes fell, and there was a large supply of Brazilian limes. This is still the case," says Genesis.

"By mid-March, we started seeing light at the end of the tunnel. The market started stabilizing, and prices reached €7.50 to €9.00. Unfortunately, it did not take long for the market to dip again."

"There is currently sufficient supply from both Brazil and Mexico. This abundant supply is putting pressure on prices. Last year, at around this time, this was not the case. In my opinion, this does not only have to do with imports," she continues.

"The weather is also to blame. People mostly use limes in drinks. Last year it was very hot around this time. The terraces were full of people enjoying a drink."

"The market is expected to stabilize before the summer. There is often less availability from Brazil around August. We hope this, combined with the increasing demand for limes, will benefit the market," Genesis concludes.
