In an interview with Agraria.pe, Felipe Bonelli, the general manager of Viticulture and Fruit Growing of Chile, spoke about the situation of the country's table-grape producing sector and highlighted the fact that Chile and Peru have the same varieties. "This is because one of the qualities that producers look for in a variety is that it is highly productive. In addition, the varieties must be resistant to pests and diseases, and have a long post-harvest life."
Bonelli also said that they still didn't know the appropriate rootstock for the 50 new table grape varieties because they were very new and each must be adapted to the climate and soil conditions of each area.
"Producers should test these new grape varieties and see which one suits their business best without losing sight of the commercial sense," Bonelli emphasized. "The most important thing to take into consideration when choosing a variety is the market. Producers must know what the market is demanding. Then they have to see how the different existing variety options adapt to that, and which varieties are suited to the business," he said.
The specialist said that conducting tests was very important to see if a variety was useful or not. "It is necessary to carry out tests in each valley," he concluded.
