"Heavy winds affected some of the fresh pear production areas in Hebei. The weather slowed down the progress of placing protective pouches over the pears on the trees. However, the overall surface area devoted to pear plantation in Hebei is enormous, and the influence of heavy winds was limited. Hebei often suffers from heavy winds and excessive rainfall around this time every year and the storms were not severe as last year." "The production volume of fresh pears in Hebei is huge this year. This is on the one hand because the overall surface area devoted to pear plantation in Hebei expands by 10% every year and the production volume follows, not taking the abundance or scarcity of a particular harvest into consideration. On the other hand, the number of pear trees at the height of their production capacity grows every year as well. The overall production volume therefore expands every year. However, according to our estimates, the export price of fresh pears will not rise in the first half of the production season. The earliest pear-variety to enter the harvest season is the early Crispy Pear around June 15th."

"The Chinese domestic market absorbs a large volume of fresh pears every year. Only around 3.7%-5% of the overall production volume of fresh Chinese pears is destined for the export market. The overall production volume suffered from extreme weather conditions last year and declined. The volume of fresh pears available for the export market was extremely small in comparison with previous years. The smaller buyers in particular had no way under these circumstances to effectively secure their supply of fresh Chinese pears and in turn supply the domestic and overseas markets."
