Jürgen Weiler, Rolf Koch GmbH:

"High-priced mango market, stable demand for avocados"

In the Baden area, at this time of the year everything revolves around asparagus. Lots of this 'white gold', as well as regional strawberries are auctioned daily in asparagus stronghold Bruchsal. They are then marketed to the surrounding markets, such as the one in Karlsruhe. In the course of this trade, the need for other products such as exotics drops off significantly, says Jürgen Weiler, Managing Director of fresh produce trader Rolf Koch GmbH from Karlsruhe.

High priced mango market
Last week, the Peruvian mango campaign finally ended. Now, South Africa is fully represented in the trade: "Also today we got goods from the Ivory Coast. However, despite the continued availability of mangoes, demand is quite limited and prices are in the high segment. However, the product quality of the Peruvian aircraft is far from being achieved. However, the taste is still excellent. All in all, we see a high-priced market situation and I assume that this will remain the same in the coming weeks," says Weiler.

Avocados: Constant market events
The low demand for fruit is directly related to the increased supply of regional strawberries and asparagus. In addition, the stone fruit campaign at Karlsruhe's hypermarket is starting to take off, says Weiler. "Regarding the avocados -which are sourced predominantly from Peru- we still see a constant demand and constant price levels. The situation has hardly changed in this area."

Papayas: Year-round product
At Rolf Koch GmbH, too, the daily business is currently all focused on asparagus and strawberries. Every day, the products -mostly regionally cultivated- are marketed in large volumes at the stall. Nonetheless, the wholesaler offers a small range of exotic fruits all year round, rounded off with Brazilian papayas. "We distribute papaya formosa all year round, in 5-packs of 7.5 kg. This is a consistent article, which is continuously marketed. "Higher temperatures and more sunshine are necessary for a resurgence of the exotic market. "Then, consumption could still get a boost."
