Fruit makes up 60-70% of produce exports

Why do Chinese companies choose fruit over vegetables?

There is a growing divide between fruit and vegetables when it comes to the Chinese import and export markets. DCF Produce Co., Ltd. is a specialized trade company with years of experience in import and export. DCF began exporting Chinese vegetables to Southeast Asian countries in 1988. They later added Chinese fruit to their export assortment. Chase Liu of DCF explained this development as follows: "We shifted our focus from vegetables to fruit in recent years. Fresh fruit accounts for 60%-70% of our export products, while only 30%-40% consists of fresh vegetables."

"There are several reasons for this shift in the export of fresh produce from vegetables to fruit: first, fruit is easier to store than vegetables. For example, many leafy vegetables are difficult to keep fresh even during transport. We can only export them to nearby countries, while fruit like oranges can be exported anywhere on the globe because we can extend the period that they stay fresh. In addition, fruit has a stronger competitive market position compared to vegetables."

The main export destinations of DCF are in Southeast Asia, South Africa, and Canada. According to Chase Liu, their main customers are overseas Chinese. Even though there are many overseas Chinese in the United States, this is not one of the main export destinations of DCF. Chase Liu explained: "While the USA would be an interesting export market for us, we do not export to the USA for a number of reasons. First, customs tariffs are extremely high because of the trade war between China and the USA. This is a great disadvantage for our export products. Second, in addition to custom tariffs, the USA also limits the volume of Chinese export products allowed into the USA. This measure makes it impossible for us to export large volumes of fruit and vegetables to the USA. We would not be able to derive a steady profit from this trade. Third, the USA also produces large volumes of Chinese vegetables and in great variety. We would not be able to compete with US companies in their own market."

"We already have more than 30 years of experience in the field of fresh Chinese fruit and vegetables. There is a reason why we were able to maintain our position in this industry for three decades. We have never stopped to innovate our marketing strategy in all these years. Not only have continued to study the market, we continuously research and develop new product varieties and innovate our trade strategy. We do all of this because development in the Chinese fruit and vegetable market is constant and high-paced. We do not want to fall behind our competition in this industry. We are brimming with confidence when we consider the future of this company. We hope to reach even more consumers and provide them with a wide variety of top-quality Chinese fruit and vegetables."
