NFO reports that the pear area in the Netherlands has once again risen in the past year: from 9,741 hectares in 2017 to 9,971 hectares. After a remarkable increase in recent years, the Buerré Alexandre Lucas area remained stable in 2018, while the decrease of Doyenné du Comice steadily continues, although at a minimum speed. Conference is still the biggest variety and takes up three-quarters of the pear area.
Within the Dutch apple production, the importance of Elstar has risen slightly in the past five years. Although the area of all apple varieties (except ‘miscellaneous varieties’) decreased in recent years, the Elstar area decreased less rapidly than average. Of the total apple area, 43.8 per cent was planted with this variety in 2018. The Junami area decreased considerably in 2018, by 20 per cent. The number of Kanzi trees also dropped. Just as with Junami, this variety reached its peak regarding area in 2016, but more trees are grubbed up than planted of this variety as well.
