Rain won't dampen Oxnard spring strawberry season

Oxnard is set to have an excellent spring strawberry crop. The region does in fact produce strawberries for extended periods throughout the year, but the spring crop is one of two main seasons where growers plan for peak volumes. Despite some rain and cooler weather returning to the region this week, growers noted that it has not affected the crop in any way. Volume is looking good so far and the fruit is sizing up nicely.

"The forecast rain for Oxnard this week did not eventuate and what they did receive was very negligible," observed Jim Grabowski of Well Pict. "Strawberry supplies will be coming on strong from next week and we are expecting peak season volumes through April and into May. Sizing is also very nice with a lot of large and extra large fruit. With the cooler weather, it took longer for the fruit to size and color up so as a result, we now also have nice color."

Decent market on the horizon
At this time of year, there are not too many regions in production and those that are, are either winding down or starting up. According to producers, this places Oxnard in a favorable position to meet a key spring window. The volume evident out in the fields also suggests that there will be decent supply for retailers to promote strawberries through the course of the Oxnard season.

"Florida is winding down now so there is less fruit around," Grabowski noted. "Although it is still too early to say, the market is expected to be relatively strong given that Oxnard will be pretty much the only region in production. This year, we are predicting that there will be plenty of promotable volume for retailers. Customers should also be pleased with that they will see in stores, with pricing likely to be competitive. It looks set for a good season all-round."

Looking forward to meeting customers at CPMA
While the Oxnard strawberry season kicks off, Well Pict will also be exhibiting at CPMA in Montreal next month. The company will be showcasing their strawberry and raspberry products, while it's also a good opportunity to meet up with customers.

"We are looking forward to meeting our Canadian customers at CPMA in Montreal next month, as well as some of our US customers that make the trip up," Grabowski said. "Our strawberries and raspberries will be on display at our booth."

Well Pict will be at Booth #506.
