Melon exports will grow by six percent this year, due to the opening of new markets for Honduran fruit, according to estimates by agricultural consultant German Perez.
This season, the country projects to export about 16 thousand containers worth 75 to 80 million dollars.
In the previous season, exports amounted to nearly 74 million dollars, a figure that is expected to increase this year.
Honduras sells its melons to more than 40 countries and it plans to expand its shipment to new markets to generate more income as well as direct and indirect jobs.
The main destination markets are countries in Europe and the United States, however the country expects to increase this list.
In the next few days Honduras will export this fruit to Chile, although it's still unclear how much it will ship there.
