"We need unified and homogeneous guilds"

Peru: Grape shipments increased by 40%

Grape exports between January and November 2018 amounted to US $544,297,000, i.e. 40% more than the US $388,115,000 achieved in the same period of 2017, reported the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

The president of ADEX, Juan Varilias Velasquez, said that grape growers were achieving this record growth because they had managed to act together to overcome different obstacles, such as logistic costs, and that they were an example for agricultural exports in general. "We need unified and homogeneous guilds. If we strengthen them, we will make the goal of making Peru the food pantry of the world a reality," he said.

Promoting the positioning of our fruit in the international market, mainly in the countries of Asia, is essential, he added. There is an interesting potential in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Korea. Furthermore, Peru is the second biggest supplier of this fruit in Thailand. "Our goal must be to position Peru as a competitive supplier; and that requires more market opening and lower logistics costs," he said.

In this regard, he said that the extension of the Agrarian Promotion Law N° 27360 was fundamental because it would help increase agricultural exports, combat informality, and reduce poverty and unemployment in the agricultural sector.

The promotion of good agricultural practices, innovation in varieties, promotion of competitiveness, and the use of new technologies, are other strategic actions that would contribute to the strengthening of grapes and other foods.

Events in favor of the actors of the chain
ADEX promotes the participation of agricultural exporters in fairs, missions, and events, such as the Expo ANTAD Alimentaria in Mexico, Thaifex in Thailand, a Trade Mission in the AAHAR fair in India, and a Trade Mission in the ANUFOOD fair in Brazil. In addition, ADEX organizes events with the public sector, such as the X Expoalimentaria, and the XX Agricultural Exportes Lunch, among others.

Export figures
Out of a total of 52 markets, the ones that stood out the most in that period were the United States (US $174,400,000) and the Netherlands (US $107,430,000) which together accounted for 51.7%. They were followed by Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, China, South Korea, Mexico, Germany, Spain, and Russia.

The destinations that grew the most were Germany (565.1%), Malaysia (503.3%), and Finland (501.7%). One of the markets that decreased in the period was the Philippines.
