New packaging solution uses ultrasound to weld fruit and vegetable nets

"Reduction of plastic waste is being discussed everywhere now"

There are discussions worldwide about reducing (plastic) waste. Above all, the food trade is held responsible for this. Packaging fruit and vegetables in nets is not a novel solution, but it is now gaining importance again, says Jörg Czepluch, CEO of C-Pack in Tornesch in Schleswig-Holstein: "Which packaging makes the most sense and which produces the least waste? In this respect our nets are very practical, of course."

"In most cases, we use metal clips to seal our nets containing, for example, oranges or onions. This type of packaging offers only a relatively small advertising space compared to the films, but uses much less plastic." However, using these metal clips makes it harder for the consumer to recycle, and so the technology has evolved. For example, C-Pack is presenting a new packaging solution at this year's Fruit Logistica: "In principle, the new packaging is already very similar to what we already know, but the material is being welded ultrasonically." This way, no additional material has to be used and a correct disposal is facilitated.

For the packers C-Pack also has a new machine, the VAC 1029, to make work more efficient: "Until now, people could only use the 300-meter packaging net before they had to refill the machine. Our new machine automates the refilling process, so work can continue for longer without interruption."

The C-Pack company was founded by Werner Czepluch in the early 1970s and launched the first semi-automatic mesh locking machine in 1973. Since then, the company has worked closely with customers to meet the needs of the current packaging industry. C-Pack's networks are sold worldwide, in over 40 countries. Focal points are the USA and the whole of Europe, but also India, China and Australia.

Here you can see a machine from C-Pack in action:
