The grape market currently has to deal with a reasonably large supply of grapes. These come from Peru in particular. This large volume puts grapes from other destinations, such as South Africa, under pressure.
"Peru has sent far more grapes to Europe than anyone expected", says Lucien de Wit of the Dutch fruit and vegetable wholesaler, LuBa Fresh. "That affects the South African grapes which are also being sent in reasonable volumes."

The Peruvian grapes are at a EUR8,50 to EUR9 price level. "Traditionally, grape prices are somewhat under pressure for the first three weeks of the year. But, in other years, prices were better. A number of boats from South Africa are coming in this week. There is enough demand, but there is simply too much supply for prices to pick up again. Prices for punnets, in particular, are too low," Lucien continues.
"The first grapes from India are on the market already. We are even getting the first grapes in week 3. Most of the Peruvian grapes will also be on the market then. So, I am optimistic about the season. The quality is good this year and the grapes are large. This high quality is sorely needed."
"Last year, there were many problems with quality at the end of the European season. Brazil then came onto the market with an average quality product. It is good that there are decent grapes on the market again. This will give clients renewed confidence in the product," Lucien concludes.
