Erik-Jan Thur, Marni Fruit:

“Tangerines from Agadir and Berkane are in each other’s way”

“Trade in citrus is currently going quite well. Prices are under slight pressure, but consumption is increasing somewhat thanks to the colder weather,” says Erik-Jan Thur of Marni Fruit. “We’re now in Clemenules with the Spanish leafy tangerines, and these are sold for prices between 8 and 9 euro. The leafless tangerines are at a similar level, although these have competition from Morocco.”

“The Moroccan citrus from Agadir and Berkane is currently arriving at the same time because supply from Berkane is earlier. This is disadvantageous for sales of the fruit, because some customers prefer citrus from Agadir, which has slightly lower prices and isn’t bad quality,” the importer continues. “With oranges, we’re now in Spanish Navelinas. For large sizes, prices are between 10.50 and 11 euro, and the small ones are selling between 8.50 and 9.50 euro. We’ll soon be switching to Navels.”

“Because of the bad weather circumstances in Spain, the fruit is slightly more sensitive, but we’re currently more affected by the irregular arrivals due to the French strikes. Some lorries aren’t affected, others arrive two days late. Fortunately, this doesn’t bother the oranges much, but it’s problematic for more delicate products,” Erik-Jan concludes.
