The Fresh Produce Association of the Americas (FPAA) said it supports the United States Ports of Entry Threat and Operational Review Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by U.S. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Gary Peters (D-MI) on December 5, 2018.
The bill directs the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to submit an operational and threat analysis of the ports of entry, looking at personnel needs, technology needs, and infrastructure needs. DHS would review improvements needed to enhance travel and trade facilitation and reduce wait times at ports of entry while also identifying improvements needed to enhance security.
“This bill is an important step forward,” said Lance Jungmeyer, FPAA president. “Efficient and secure ports of entry benefit the entire country and help drive economic growth across the United States. We appreciate Senators Cornyn and Peters in working together in a bipartisan effort on this important bill. The health, security and vitality of our ports of entry is something that impacts us all.”
The bill is a companion to H.R. 6400, the United States Ports of Entry Threat and Operational Review Act, which was introduced by Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-Ariz.) in July. The Senate version of the bill also includes language important to consumers and companies in the food and beverage trade as it would direct DHS to determine whether improvements are needed in secondary inspection areas to meet existing food safety requirements.
“We look forward to continuing to work closely with the House and Senate to move this bill forward and to ensure the Senate language on secondary inspection areas and food safety are in the final draft that passes Congress,” said Jungmeyer. “We are committed to working closely with Members of Congress on this important initiative.”
