Peru: Mango shipments are expected to resume next week

Mango producers met yesterday at Cruceta. After several hours, they finally decided to remove the roadblocks. This means that, as of today, the harvest may continue and export can resume. From now on, producers and exporters will hold a weekly so that they all are informed about the situation in the overseas market. The first shipments of mango to Europe will most likely come out next week, which means that the first mangoes will arrive to that destination in the first week of January.

According to El Tiempo, a national newspaper, the president of the Board of Users of San Lorenzo, Bruno Fossa, estimates Tambogrande alone had losses for 20 million soles in exports. "The entire mango export chain has been affected," said Fossa.

The elected mayor of the district of Tambogrande, Alfredo Rengifo, said that the producers urgently needed training by the State. "This isn't a new problem, it's been a problem for a while. We need an agricultural program and farmers need to associate and become micro-entrepreneurs. We can't treat the farmer like peasants. We have to empower them."
