"When an entrepreneur asks us for advice as regards the type of orchard, we reply with a series of questions: what are the sales channels, cultivation areas, level of specialization of the company, labor availability, etc. Without mentioning the availability of water for fertigation purposes, which is essential," explains co-owner Paolo Laghi.

Nursery gardening as perceived by Battistini Vivai doesn't just mean selling plants. "To achieve best results, we need to consider a series of factors and be careful about new varieties if they haven't been tested for long. Generally, when there are lots of hectares to cover, we recommend a mix of well-tested and new varieties," adds general director Giulano Dradi.

In the past, research focused a lot on shelf-life and appearance, but these parameters are no longer enough to guarantee a sale when there is tastier fruit or other options available. Of course shelf-life is still important, but it must go hand in hand with organoleptic quality, Brix level and aroma.

"Eastern European markets are the liveliest, as a lot of entrepreneurs are making investments even though they lack the skills. That's why they require turnkey solutions or to be put into contact with professionals who can assist them through the various phases."

Many countries bordering with Russia are planting thousands of hectares to supply that market, which is always looking for new suppliers after closing its frontiers with the West.

"Our role is to help entrepreneurs make the best choice when it comes to the variety and type of orchard. It's still possible to make a profit with fruit, but it takes a modern approach," conclude Laghi and Dradi.

Next year, Battistini will celebrate its 70th anniversary and the new catalog is already available.
