Last week there was a shortage in the supply of raspberries from Spain, Morocco and Portugal. Therefore, UK fresh produce supplier Jacana Produce air-freighted raspberries from Mexico to fill the gap.
“Spain and Morocco will have raspberries again this week, but we have strong relationships with our growers in Mexico with whom we are in touch to ensure we have a constant supply,” said Daniela Ivanova from Jacana. “Raspberries from Mexico are brought in via airfreight, so of course they are more expensive, but they are fantastic quality. Supply from Spain and Morocco was limited in January and February earlier this year and we might see this again next year so it is good to keep our options open.”
Jacana Produce also has sea freight blueberries from Peru. Blueberries have decreased in price over the last couple of weeks. Jacana expect their first sea freight Chilean blueberry arrival at the beginning of January.
Guatemalan and Mexican blackberries are also available now, with a steady price, good quality and good demand.
The season for Dutch and Belgian strawberries is almost finishing, leaving the market for Egyptian fruit to take over. “Egypt started this week with limited volumes and are fetching high prices, but it will be a short season running until the end of February.”
