André Boon, Scherpenhuizen:

“Large Brazilian mango supply puts pressure on prices”

Brazilian mangoes are currently abundantly available on the European market. “Every week, 250 to 260 containers are shipped to Europe, that’s 20 per cent more than last year. This affects prices, which are at a considerably lower level than last year,” says André Boon of Scherpenhuizen.

“The supply of Kent, Keitt, Tommy Atkins and the final Palmer mangoes from Brazil ensures plenty of supply on the mango market. Demand is fair, but because of the large volumes, prices continue to be under pressure. Fortunately the Spanish season of the Osteen mango is ending, so that higher prices for the Brazilian mango are expected,” André continues.

“On the other hand, Peru has already started its air cargo mangoes again, and the first seaborne cargo shipments will start two weeks from now, so that the first arrivals might occur in the first week of December. This will definitely cause an interesting month of December,” the importer concludes. “The Peruvian season will end earlier than last year, and in total, they have 20 to 25 per cent fewer mangoes, although it will definitely be enough to provide all markets with mangoes.”
