An excellent harvest in terms of yield and quality, ready to be marketed. We are talking about the red Falstaff pear, farmed only in a few hectares - which are set to increase soon. Giuseppe Pallotti of Newplant stated, “Currently, there are almost 70 hectares planted, and not all of them are in production. The 2018 harvest has a good size and a standard colour. The marketing will begin within the next few weeks”.
The Consorzio Opera will take care of marketing the pear in Italy and in the EU. On the other hand, Apofruit will take care of the organic and of the marketing outside the EU.
Pallotti added, “After a few weeks of refrigeration, Falstaff shows off all its organoleptic potential. The current volumes are still quite small. Therefore, we will proceed by doing targeted sale so to promote our product in the best way possible”
The Falstaff variety is protected by the CREA of Forlì on an EU level. Newplant was exclusively assigned with the marketing management for the promotion of fruits. Newplant is the consortium created by Apo Conerpo, Apofruit and Orogel Fresco for researching new fruit varieties on a global level.
Falstaff is not a pear for everyone. You need specialised producers capable of managing the plant. It is a demanding plant that requires a non-canonical pruning. The farmer has to see the shape of the plant and model it. It must be very carefully treated in nursery gardens as well, in order for the plant to express its full potential.
