Peru: Ica vine growers export to 43 international markets

During the 2017/2018 campaign, the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) certified in Ica 163,490 tons of table grapes for export to 43 international markets, which allowed Ica to consolidate itself as one of the main grape producers in Peru.

The main destination was the North American market with 73,617 tons, i.e. 45.03% of exports from Ica. It was followed by the Asian continent with 47,305 tons (28.93%), and the European market with 33,242 tons (20.33%).

Exports to the Middle East, Africa, South America, and Central America account for the remaining 5.7%.

The grape export campaign takes place between October and March. This season, the Senasa carried out different activities in compliance with the work plans and phytosanitary requirements signed or established with the destination countries.

Senasa certified the production areas and packing facilities, conducted phytosanitary inspections, executed quarantine treatments, and issued phytosanitary export certifications, among other things.

Senasa certified 169 production sites for the 2017/2018 campaign. Most of them are located in the province of Ica (149), and the provinces of Pisco (13), Chincha (05), and Nazca (2). In total, 7,868.82 hectares were certified.

Senasa also certified shipments and cold treatments in 34 packing plants, and issued 9,854 grape certifications throughout the region.

The main exported variety was the Red Globe grape from Ica, which accounted for 47.60% of all exports, as the international markets prefer it due to its appearance, color, and size. It was followed by the Flame Seedless grape with 10.94% of all shipments and the Sugraone variety with 9.07%.

At the national level, the region of Ica continues lead vine production due to the actions carried out by the private sector and Senasa to eradicate the fruit fly.
