Avocados from Michoacán coming in strong

The supply of avocados in Mexico has switched over to new-crop supply and is coming in with good volume.

“The quality of avocados is strong and the supply is excellent and we are beginning to enter the new crop season from Michoacán,” says Cindy Schwing of London Fruit Inc. based in Pharr, TX. “We’re a year-round supplier of avocados so we strive for consistent volume and we’re just starting supply of the Aventajada (new crop).”

Schwing says that volume of Hass avocados is up from last year which helps meet a continually strong demand for the fruit. “Demand is still growing,” says Schwing, noting that its location in Pharr is ideal given that the City of Pharr International Bridge is the number one place for avocados and tomatoes crossing from Mexico to the U.S. “It just seems that the more retailers work with us in promoting and pricing avocados with reasonable prices so the consumer can bear that, we’ll continue to see growth.

Industry push
“Also, the industry’s marketing arm, Avocados from Mexico, does a fantastic job of getting the word out about this versatile fruit, its many nutritional aspects, recipes and product information as well,” says Schwing. “It’s helped the industry grow, supported its importers and tapped into the growing trend of eating avocados on a daily basis even.” Other marketing efforts include London urging customers to follow the company on its social media feeds, especially Instagram, for regular updates and supply information.

While Mexico supplies avocados year-round, at the same time, supplies are also coming into the U.S. from other sources including Peru, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and even domestically with production in California. “Every year you get one or two more countries coming in,” says Jerry Garcia, also of London Fruit.

Packaging development
Meanwhile London Fruit is considering packaging options for its avocados down the road. “Everybody wants to be a little different than their competitors so we’re starting to look into that and get away from the conventional packaging and possibly specialty packing for certain people,” says Garcia.
