Consumer watchdog: Bad marks for online supermarkets

Select products, your chosen delivery time, speedy deliveries: Sounds temptingly easy. But how well does the ordering of food on the Internet work? Do things arrive punctually and completely? Are meat and fish cool enough? How good is the service? Stiftung Warentest has tested ten online delivery services, including AmazonFresh and Rewe Lieferservice. Four deliver nationwide. The grades range from 2.7 to 4.5. Chilled goods in particular seem to be hard to do right.

The test results: far from positive. Out of 245 ordered refrigerated products, Stiftung Warentest said 136 were too warm (56 percent) on arrival. Sometimes the temperature was over 20 degrees - far too much for sensitive goods like chicken. Strawberries often reached the testers mushed or mouldy. The tested services did score well overall regarding punctuality.

With regard to packaging and its waste, few vendors came away well. Surprisingly, organic online supermarket Natur.com scored worst in this category for shipping disposable coolers.

In terms of data protection, Amazon Fresh scored particularly low: Its privacy statement does not comply with the GDPR. This is annoying for the US shipping giant, as they are the only one who got the grade "good" in the areas of fulfilling orders and delivery. The fact that their data protection was poor messed up their rating, ultimately resulting in them ending up in midfield only.

The winner of the test is delivery service Mytime (2.7), although their large amounts of packaging material negatively impacted their score. Food.de, however, finished last with a grade of 4.5.
