With potato harvest underway, one Canadian food company is finding no trouble sourcing product.
“We use U.S. potatoes from Washington and the supply is excellent. Right now is harvest so there’s an abundance of potatoes,” says Lisa Wood of The Greengrocer Inc. in Mississauga, Ont. “We buy potatoes as our customers need them, so we haven’t had any issues with supply. The quality of the potatoes is also very good.”
Greengrocer’s specialty potato product is a Burbank russet foil-wrapped baking potato. “Because of the unique package of our potatoes, the middle of April until September was the busiest time for us,” says Wood. “People barbecue and they like to use these potatoes on the barbecue.” She adds that while the biggest volume of potatoes moved for Greengrocer is in the summer, the company’s sales do continue year-round.
Demand letting up
And with it being well into fall, demand for the foil-wrapped potato is lighter now. “In the next few weeks, we expect the usual—it’s a pretty steady business,” says Wood.
While the company does work on some contract pricing, Wood does note that prices are down somewhat right now compared to springtime pricing when potatoes largely hailed from fall storage supplies.
