Last season, the value of Andalusian strawberry exports, nearly 95% of which are grown in the province of Huelva, surpassed the 461 million euro, i.e. nearly 3.96% less than the value achieved in the 2016-2017 season.
This, according to a campaign summary report prepared by the Price and Market Observatory of the Junta de Andalucía, which states that producers sold 222,076 tons of strawberries, 12.6% less than the 254,202 tons they sold in the previous season.
The report also states that the unit value increased by 9% over the previous period, going from 1.89 euro/ kilo to 2.08 euro/ kilo.
In addition, it indicates that the first half of the season was marked by a great fluctuation of prices. At the beginning of the season, prices at origin were somewhat low; a trend that was reversed in January, when they achieved very good levels until the end of February, as a result of the decline in production caused by unfavorable weather.
Afterwards, prices stabilized and when spring arrived, the supply contracted, both in the national and international markets, so prices stayed at better levels than in the previous two seasons. In April, when the bulk of the campaign was harvested, prices were similar to those achieved in the previous campaigns, although slightly higher.
