Argentina: The retentions on fruit exports are unacceptable

The president of the Chamber of Agricultural Producers of Fernandez Oro, Carlos Zanardi, criticized the national government's measure that reinstates withholdings on all exports. "Applying them equally is not a good measure, especially in the case of soybeans and their derivatives, which have a net retention of 2.5%," he said.

Zanardi joined other critical voices. Yesterday, the leader Eduardo Artero said the measure screwed producers.

"The retentions will impact the pear and apple sector of the Rio Negro and Neuquen Valleys by nearly 1,500 million a year," the rural leader of Fernández Oro estimated.

"It is not true that all exports are taxed equally. The net retentions for soybeans and its derivatives only amount to 2.5%. Thus, fruit production is much more affected than soybeans."

According to Zanardi, "the effective retention on fruit is applied on the finished package, which amounts to more than 30%, because it is always discounted on the fruit, i.e. 2 pesos per kilo for the producer." "We find it unacceptable," he added.

"The fruit-growing sector of the region of the Valleys of Rio Negro and Neuquen believes that this national measure is oppressive," he concluded.
