International Avocado Congress in Jalisco: competitiveness and quality

The results of the 6th Congress of the Avocado, which was held in Jalisco, Mexico, this year were very flattering.

The organizing committee of the event, APEJAL, let the readers of FreshPlaza know that there were 32 presentations by recognized national and international specialists, who mainly addressed technical issues related to the crop, such as pruning, pests, irrigation, diseases, fertigation and post-harvest, as well as regulations in the industry with emphasis on nurseries; There were also presentations on marketing, and for the first time in this event, on the environment and a panel on industrialization.



In the framework of the congress, 70 companies exhibited machinery, equipment, services, and supplies, including: tractors, sprayers, agricultural drones, shredders, insurance, organic and conventional inputs, refrigeration equipment, labels, harvest boxes, water collection tanks, customs agents, technology for water retention, laboratories, safety consultants, nurseries, certifiers, marketers and export packaging, among others.

On the third and last day of the event, the participants could visit orchards and packaging facilities in the production area of ​​Ciudad Guzman and its surroundings; an opportunity that was very well received by the congressmen and showed the impeccable organization of the committee.



AGRO21, the official representatives of the congress, stated that the event had been attended by 784 people from the Mexican states of Jalisco, Michoacan, State of Mexico, Morelos, Nayarit, Colima, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Guanajuato and Chiapas, and from international delegation of Peru, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, the United States, and the Dominican Republic.

In addition to the above, APEAJAL delivered the Sustainable Avocado, Jalisco 2018, award in this third edition. The winner was Grupo Aguacatero Los Cerritos, who have shown a great commitment to the environment, managing their operation in a sustainable manner.



APEAJAL, the Association of Jalisco Avocado Exporters, promotes this type of production and encourages its members to follow these important examples. During the inauguration, Rainforest Alliance certifications were delivered for various orchards and, for a Chain of Custody package.

There were also very nice shows during the meals, with folkloric ballet and mariachi bands, to promote the Mexican regional traditions, and the organizing committee decided to contribute with a social cause; the beneficiary institution was the INADEJ of Los Altos area, which presented during the event's closing meal its more than 20 years trajectory supporting people with different disabilities.
