Rene Bouman, FMI:

"Weeks with more than 180 containers of limes were too much for the European market"

The lime market was difficult this summer. It has now stabilised somewhat. "How the market will further develop greatly depends on the volumes sent this way. Limes are a typical summer product. However, weeks with more than 180 containers, meant there was too much of a good thing this summer", says Rene Bouman of Dutch importers, FMI.

"Until mid-April, the lime market was not good. May and June were good months. Then, in June, there were so many limes loaded in Mexico and Brazil that the market was flooded. This put the market under pressure resulting in low prices", says René. At the moment, prices of about EUR6-7 are being paid.

"In September, once the holidays are over, the demand for limes normally declines. It is, however, of the utmost importance that the volumes remain under control. This will ensure that the market remains stable. After all, we not only have to deal with supplies from Mexico and Brazil. Emerging production countries, such as Colombia and Guatemala are sending an increasing number of limes to Europe", concludes the importer.
