Fenaco opens new pome fruit storage
In the future , the Valais apples could be stored using the latest technology, Fenaco announced. The warehouse was put into operation punctually at the beginning of the harvest. It was created on a neighbouring plot of performance centre Braeburn. At the Charrat site, around 15,000 tons of pome fruit are taken over by 50 producers each year.
So far, about half of the apples were transported to external warehouses, because their own facilities were too small. Dependence on these warehouses can now be reduced, says Fenaco. Also, the number of transport trips can be reduced.
The apple cold storage is operated by means of dynamically controlled atmosphere (DCA). As a result, the oxygen content can be reduced gradually and adjusted continuously to the physiological state of the fruits. This way, the apples can be stored for longer periods of time.
940 solar modules with a capacity of 270 watts each have been installed on the storage roof. They can cover 90 percent of the energy requirements.
