UK and China sign important potato agreement

The UK Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr. Liam Fox, has accomplished a new trade deal. This agreement allows the UK to export seed potatoes to China to satisfy the growing consumer demand for fries and potato crisps.

Scottish farms deliver about 70% of the UK seed potato export volume (100 thousand tons). This trade agreement will bring great benefit to Scotland. The UK export market for seed potatoes has an annual sales value of 90 million GBP [116.18 million USD]. Some varieties sell for as much as 900 GBP [1,168 USD] per ton.

China is the largest consumer of potatoes in the world. The demand for potato-based products grows every day and the once inconspicuous potato is now the fourth largest staple food after rice, corn, and wheat. The consumer demand is growing rapidly.
