“This new Green-Red plum variety will hopefully take Europe by storm”

The Japanese plums are available for a few more weeks, as the harvesting season is coming to an end. Due to the rain in Turkey there have been damages among the plums, however those that survived actually grew a bit bigger than last year. The Japanese plum is relatively new for Tekfen Alanar, an exporting company based in Turkey. They only started growing the plum last year, but this season the amount of produce has doubled and the company expects this growth to continue over the next few years.

Yigit Gokyigit, marketing and sales manager for Tekfen Alanar, explains that there are quite a few cool varieties. “The most popular Japanese plum would be the Black Diamond. We produce about the same amount of these plums as we do other varieties, but the Black Diamonds are always the best sellers. There is one unique variety that is only produced by Alanar in Turkey, called the Green-Red Plum. Green on the outside, red on the inside. This plum is very sweet compared to the other varieties, which can be a bit more sour. The Green-Red Plums are visually appealing and we expect them to do very well in the upcoming years.”

Alanar’s Japanese plums are mostly exported to the Far East; areas like Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong are already in line for these plums. “The Japanese plums aren’t really in demand in Europe, but we’re looking to change that next year. With a little more directed marketing, we believe these Japanese plums will become more popular,” Gokyigit explains. “Hopefully the Green-Red Plum will take Europe by storm!”

The company will have some competition for the other varieties though, as Spain and the United States also produce Japanese plums. Luckily the plums are also very popular in Turkey, so Alanar will always be able to sell them domestically.
