Good apple harvest in Sweden

Kristianstadsbladet. The harvest is now in full swing at various orchards, and this will probably last until the second week of November. A large part of the harvest will be supplied to Swedish supermarkets. Manager Henrik Stridh of cooperative Äppelriket Österlen expects growers to have positive months. “Our growers expect about 14,000 tonnes of apples this year, about the same as in record year 2016. However, prudence is called for, after all, the cooperative would like to prevent major fluctuations in quality. We’re striving for a yield as stable as possible,” Henrik says. For this year, he expects a total yield of 11 million euro. However, he also expects prices to be lower due to the large supply in shops.

One of the member-owners of Äppelriket Österlen is Kivik Holding, the group behind Kiviks Musteri and Åkessons Vin, among other things. They also expect a good harvest. Yet manager Jan Flemming Jensen of Kiviks Musteri is hoping for some rain and a few cold nights. The branches of the fruit trees in Solnäs are heavy with apples. The harvest is in full swing in part of the orchard. “The first variety we harvest is Discovery. We’ve started harvesting nearly two weeks earlier than in previous years, and this will probably be the case for all varieties,” says Jan, who acquired the orchard four years ago.
