Badische Concorde variety is in good condition despite the heat

'Good season for this year's organic pears'

In line with the early apple harvest, the pear producers in the major growing regions have already started. Among others in Brandenburg, Lower Saxony and several areas in southern Germany, the first fruit of the new campaign has already been harvested and marketed. Although the week-long heat area certainly has had its effects, the first lots of the Concorde variety in Oberrheingraben - close to the French border - have turned out very well. After a break of three years, organic produce from the region is again available on a wholesale level and in market-relevant quantities.

High sugar content
In the warehouse of wholesale company Appenweier Frische GmbH based in Göttingen, pears from local orchards have been available for three weeks now. In the meantime, three biological varieties are already on offer: the common Conference, Clara Fries and Clapp's darling from Northern Germany, as well as the Concorde. "We buy our Concorde pears mainly from a Demeter-certified producer from Ortenaukreis on the French border," says Ms. Felicitas Mesecke, Managing Director of the wholesaler. Although the dryness was a factor in this region, the quality of the first few lots is clear. They have a very high sugar content and a overall normal size. Especially the Concorde pear is outstanding with its delicate enamel and -in full ripeness- marzipan-like aroma."

Good season
In the last three years, only limited quantities could be harvested and marketed to wholesalers in the area, due to the weather. This year, however, the signs are promising and a good return is forecast. "We expect a good harvest," confirms Mesecke. '' We will probably be able to offer the Concorde pears by the end of the month. Directly afterwards we can count on a good amount of the 'Harrow'
variety, also from Baden."

Organic Wholesale
Appenweier Frische GmbH is a wholesale company that has been passionately engaged in organic food for over 8 years. High-quality fruits and vegetables are sourced from both regional and foreign countries and marketed nationwide to delivery services, weekly marketers, farm shops and retailers. In addition to providing the goods on a daily basis, the team takes care of the active co-development of products, from the selection of the producers, the selection of varieties, the packaging and the harvest times to the calibration.
