Sun Belle Inc. expands East Coast capacity with new facility

To expand its growing berry business as well as to provide third-party perishables handling capability, one marketer and distributor of berries has expanded its presence in Miami, Fl.

Sun Belle Inc., which handles blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, golden berries, cranberries and red currants, has opened an 82,000-square-foot refrigerated distribution facility in Miami for berries and its other commodities. “Sun Belle has had Miami operations for more than 16 years,” says Sun Belle’s Janice Honigberg.

Honigberg says the company bought the facility in February 2017 and built it out to their specifications so it would have enough room for its growing berry business as well as to provide handling services for others. Sun Belle’s other operations include a 63,000-square-foot facility in Jessup, MD; a 52,000-square-foot facility in Schiller Park, Ill.; and 14,000 square feet of dedicated space in a larger Oxnard, Ca. facility.

Cold chain handling
The facility, which is adjacent to the Miami International Airport and also sits near the port of Miami and multiple major Miami expressways, features nine docks, including seven refrigerated docks, four pre-coolers, seven independent coolers, two large refrigerated work rooms, a refrigerated dock and dry storage. “We’re very experienced in maintaining the cold chain and have ensured that perishables can be loaded, unloaded, handled and stored without breaking temperature,” says Honigberg. “In addition, we have an experienced team of regraders and sorters who can ensure perishables make arrivals at their ultimate destination.” She added that Sun Belle moved into the facility in February of this year.

The facility, directed by Mariella Marrero, Sun Belle’s general manager since 2006, is also Primus Global Food Safety (GFS), Organic and Demeter Biodynamic certified and the company is also looking at possibly installing automated blueberry sorting equipment to pack bulk berries.
