Everyone makes room to make up for closed basement

Munich wholesale market: Marketers helping marketers

Now that the basement of the wholesale market hall is partially closed off, the wholesale market family shows its cohesion. With the aid of other marketers, the Umschlagzentrum Großmarkt München GbR has cleared enough space for the affected firms to allow them to continue the sale.

"We called on the marketers in our transhipment center and asked them who could provide space," says Christa Heidingsfelder, Chief Representative of UGM GbR. So a total of 2,000 of the required 3,000 square meters came together to give the marketers that originally worked from the basement enough space for their businesses.

Provision of space
However, this can not be a permanent solution. "The situation shows how urgently a new wholesale market hall in Munich is needed. Our existence is at stake," says Heidingsfelder.
But this situation also shows how strong the bond between marketers is and how they are willing to help each other. "The cohesion on the site is exceptional. Here you can see how long-term many relationships have grown and which values are important in trade and life. The network that has been built up for decades now catches marketers before they fall, securing the livelihoods of small and medium-sized enterprises," is how Heidingsfelder describes this course of events. The entire area of the now closed off basement could be substituted by rearranging the free spaces in the market hall.

Alternative wholesale market hall concept
UGM GbR has recently made public an alternative proposal for a wholesale market hall concept in Sendling. The UGM concept envisages the construction of a new wholesaler hall opposite the Munich Süd district heating plant, which would at the same time open up new urban development perspectives for the city. The Umschlagzentrum Großmarkt München GbR has been operating as a private hall operator on the area of the wholesale market since 1986 and manages three transhipment halls for wholesalers.
