The specialized personnel of the Cargo division of AA carries out exact logistics procedures every day against the clock so that Mexico can sell its fruits and vegetables in the US, European, and Asian markets in a period of 24 to 72 hours.
The process required to sell perishable products from Michoacán or Chiapas in Boston, Tokyo, or Johannesburg is complex and requires a deep specialization and speed, stated Lorena Sandoval, the general director of the American Airlines' Cargo division for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Last May, the American Airlines (AA) fleet transported 181 thousand tons of cargo around the world, including Mexican avocados, fruits, and vegetables.
American Airlines has 328 weekly direct flights from Mexico to different cities in the United States. The flights depart from the international airports of Cancun, Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta.
The transport of perishable food responds to seasons, which are tied with harvest times, Sandoval stated.
"The first season is the strongest season for Mexico in terms of vegetables. Between November and March Argentina exports blueberries; and Brazil exports between August and October," she said. These three countries, together with Chile, are the largest suppliers of cargo transportation products for AA in the Latin American region.
"Mexico is a very interesting market because they ship many products to the United States," said Sandoval, adding that, even though the perishables that the company transport the most are oregano, basil, and Habanero peppers, the avocado was one of their flagship products.
