Argentina establishes a quality protocol for fresh cherries

The Ministry of Agribusiness established a Quality Protocol for Fresh Cherries. This item is part of fruit species that is characterized mainly by their soft skins and by being highly perishable.

This protocol is important, as the cherry stands out in the Argentine exports of fresh fruits. This is reflected by the significant number of hectares devoted to this fruit in the country. Currently five provinces grow cherry trees: Santa Cruz, Chubut, Rio Negro, Neuquen, and Mendoza. There are also plantations, although at a non-commercial level, in Buenos Aires, San Luis, San Juan, Cordoba, and Catamarca.

The minimum requirements that the fruits must meet include: being well developed, healthy, not having strange smells and / or flavors, being in a state of appropriate maturity according to color, having an appropriate content of sugars and adequate consistency, not having spots, injuries or wounds, and being free of bruising and rot.

In addition, the presence of any foreign matter such as dust, leaves, stones, insects, hairs, among others will not be accepted. It is also advisable to have shaded sites in the fields to protect the harvested fruit from the sun and from the weather until it is taken to a packing facility. The cherries should be kept in these containers for as short as possible to avoid damages and the proliferation of pathogens in the field.
