BLE Marktbericht KW27/18

Germany: Apple imports from overseas are setting the tone

An influx of European apples from this year's season was increasingly noticeable. This was particularly true in Frankfurt with the Polish Geneva Early and Bialy Nalew. In Hamburg, local, homegrown apples and in Berlin the native Lodi could be accessed. Of course, these quantities were small and, at best, played a minor role.

The interest in all this was increasingly limited and availability diminished quickly. The tone was set by the imports from overseas: New Zealand and Chile clearly dominated, providing several varieties. Argentina and South Africa complemented things. A very constant demand, locally mostly not very pronounced, usually guaranteed stable prices. In Frankfurt, New Zealand Royal Galas were tight for a bit, but this had no impact on the prices.

Pears
As summer fruit was more in demand, the marketing of these was sluggish and sales of Chilean, South African and Argentine fruit was slow.

Table grapes
Italy dominated events with the Victoria and the Black Magic. Demand was generally described as quite lively; The trade was sometimes rather brisk. The prices often stayed at their previous level.

Strawberries
German supply almost had a monopoly. The ratings dropped and the price ranges widened. This was caused by several factors, such as returns from food retail, increased supply and inconsistent quality.

Apricots
Turkey, France and Spain prevailed. All in all, demand was quite good. The Southern European batches, however, sometimes suffered from quality problems, so prices varied quite a bit.

Cherries
German and Turkish fruits dominated. Marketing was uneven. In some markets, prices rose, while in others they crumbled.

Peaches and nectarines
The markets were well supplied with Spanish and Italian lots. Qualitatively good French lots complemented thing, as well as Greek fruit, that expanded its presence slightly.

Plums
Local Hermans dominated, the presence of the Katinka expanded enormously, while the importance of the Ruth Gerstetter shrank. Bosnian erly Cacaks supplemented the range of goods, but demand could not keep up.

Kiwis
New Zealand dominated the events, ahead of Chile and Italy. The steady demand was easily covered and there were no significant changes in the prices.

Lemons
Spanish Vernas prevailed; Eurekas from Argentina and South Africa completed. The quality of overseas imports was not always convincing, which slowed down trade in some places.

Bananas
Supply was adjusted to the demand, so that as a rule no large stocks existed. Trade was continuous, but quite subdued from time to time.

Cauliflower
German batches dominated the business. Supply intensified a little. The summer temperatures, however, limited the sales a bit.

Lettuce
Iceberg lettuce came mainly from Germany. Sales were livened up by the warm weather, in sync with the deliveries from Holland. Good sales inevitably led to higher prices.

Cucumbers
Regarding snake cucumbers, domestic produce dominated. Belgian supplies were almost on a par with Dutch vegetables. Prices sometimes diverged, depending on place, sizes or day of the week.

Tomatoes
Dutch and Belgian lots prevailed. German sales grew because of good colouration, firmness and taste. Only cherry tomatoes came from Italy.

Sweet peppers
The Dutch suppliers continued to dominate the business. There was more than enough supply to quench the not so dynamic demand. Prices did not need to be modulated significantly.

Onions
Onions mostly came from Spain. In general, great availability met a low demand. Most traders had to reduce their prices slightly.
