Price increase weakens onion exports

Onion stocks of the 2017 harvest are now running out. In Austria, onion producers can look back on a thoroughly enjoyable month. Traders and farmers alike hardly had any goods left to sell.

In early May, Austrian products were still very much in demand abroad. Prices for onions sorted in boxes rose from 21,00 EUR/dt in KW18 to 30,00 EUR/dt in KW 22. That's a hefty 42.8% increase within one month. Naturally the exports suffered from such prices which, although favourable to domestic availability, could not compete against the cheap competition as from countries like Holland.
