Speed limit on French by-roads increased to 80 km per hour

As of 1 July, 400,000 kilometres of French by-roads will have a maximum speed of 80 km per hour. The roads to which the new speed limit will be applied are national and departmental two-lane roads without partitions in the middle. On the so-called four-lane sections (two by two lanes separated by partitions) the speed limit will remain 90 km per hour.

Three-lane roads
The infamous three-lane roads in France have a limit of 90 km per hour on sections of two lanes where passing other cars is allowed. Where these roads turn into one lane again, speed has to be dropped to 80 km per hour again.

All traffic
The limit of 80 km per hour was already in effect for starting drivers and lorry traffic in France, but will now be applied to all traffic. The speed cameras will therefore be adjusted to the new limit as of 1 July. Fines when caught on camera going 90 km per hour will be €68 and one point on your licence.

The aim of this measure is a reduction of the number of accidents on these roads and a reduction of emissions.
