There was a good harvest but disappointing prices

China: What does the future hold for Hainan's fruits?

Recently, the fact that Hainan's mangoes, pineapples and lychees have been hard to sell, even at low prices, has attracted extensive attention. According to statistics of the Hainan agricultural department, this year, the cultivation area of Hainan mangoes was 810 thousand mu, with a production volume of 1,040 thousand tons. The cultivation area of pineapples is 246 thousand mu, with a production volume of 409 thousand tons; and the area of lychees was 311 thousand mu, with a production volume of 200 thousand tons. The harvested cultivation area is 259 thousand mu.

According to the statistics of Hainan, the main problem is low prices. These fruits are not really unsaleable. The agricultural department of Hainan held a news conference to introduce the production and sales situation. The head of the Hainan agricultural department, the secretary of the party, Xu Yun, made an introduction about the related problems. According to him, generally speaking, the reasons that these tropical fruits can only be sold in low prices are that:

1. The variety is not good. The demand for new varieties exceeds that of supply; for the old variety, the supply exceeds the demand.

2. The time when the Hainan fruits entered the market "conflicted" with the time when other tropical fruits from Yunnan and Fujian entered the market.

3. The price of labor increased, therefore, the cost of fruit followed suit.

4. The transport capacity is not enough. For example, there are 500 tons of lychees that can not be transported outside of the island because the transport vehicles are too few.

5. The processing productivity is not enough. Since the number of fruit processing factories is limited, now it's impossible to sell all the inferior fruits.

6. The organizational degree is not high.

In order to promote the development of the tropical and subtropical fruit industry, the 2018 Asia (Hainan) Exhibition of Fruit and Vegetable Industries will be held from June 29th to July 1st at the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center.
