From now on, only hydro-cooled cherries at Hoogstraten

Yesterday, the first cherries of the season were sold at Coƶperatie Hoogstraten in Belgium. There were supplied by grower, Joris Christianen. He established his plantation six years ago. Since then, two more farmers have started cultivating cherries. They have chosen to plant different varieties. This was done to ensure that all the plantations do come into production at the same time. This means production is spread over +/- 6 weeks. The early varieties are available in June, the later ones in July.

Hoogstraten cherries are all grown under protection. They are harvested when ripe and have a full flavour. The entire line's quality is assured by the Hoogstraten mark of quality. The cherries are also mechanically sorted. This makes for a nice-looking product that is correctly sorted.

New this year with Hoogstraten cherries, is hydro cooling. The cultivators have made the necessary investments for this. The cherries are quickly cooled shortly after being picked. This provides benefits further up the chain. This makes hydro cooling a major asset. Thanks to this technique, the cherries not only remain firmer and nicer-looking. Their shelf life is also improved.

Hoogstraten does not auction its cherries. They are sold directly. About 80 tonnes of cherries are expected this year. Along with strawberries, kiwi berries, and other soft fruit, cherries are an excellent addition to the Hoogstraten family.
