BLE Marktbericht KW23/18

Clearing of domestic new potatoes intensifies

The clearing of domestic, new potatoes is intensifying. Their availability in the markets was noticeably growing. Some people even spoke of a supply glut. The increased quantities inevitably called for price drops. As a result, the offers became increasingly interesting for a broad range of consumers. As a result, sales increased. Supplies from Italy were sometimes limited but still made up the bulk of the product range. In this sector too, prices were often dipping, in particular because of tougher competition from Germany. The supply from Cyprus declined sharply. They kept selling rather cheaply. The domestic stored goods gradually lost in importance. Although the business was not as smooth as before, traders were mostly able to keep their prices at the current levels. Attempts to raise these a little only had limited success and only for lots of excellent quality.
