Lower Austria:

Ample supply of new potatoes

Last weekend, the new potato season in Austria really started. Although there are still some batches of potatoes from the old harvest available for marketing, these last lots are likely to be marketed by next week; after that, they will no longer play a substantial role.

Since the beginning of the week, new potatoes are now being harvested in all Austrian provinces. The yields per hectare are quite different. In Burgenland, Styria and Upper Austria the farmers are quite content. In Lower Austria, the first yields of 15 to just over 20 tons per hectare were still quite manageable.

This year, many farmers want to quickly clear their new potato fields, so supplies are plentiful. LEH sales are rather modest due to the high temperatures. Producer prices are declining accordingly. In Upper Austria, prices for these potatoes were still €45,- per 100kg at the beginning of the week, and in Lower Austria, Styria and Burgenland the prices ranged between €35,- and 40,- per 100kg.
