135,000 tons of strawberries harvested from Germany's fields in 2017

This year's strawberry season is already in full swing and local strawberries are very popular. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), in 2017 around 135,000 tons of strawberries were harvested in Germany. Of this amount, some 116,000 tons are from strawberry cultivation outdoors and about 20,000 tons for strawberries under high walk-in protective covers (including greenhouses).

The total strawberry harvest in 2017 was about 14% below the average for the past five years (2012-2016: around 158,000 tons). This is partly due to frost in the spring of 2017.

Most of the strawberries were harvested in Lower Saxony at 35,000 tons, followed by 33,000 tons in North Rhine-Westphalia and 21,000 tons in Baden-Württemberg.
