Nico Spruijt, Yex:

"On-year ensures good avocado supply"

There is currently an ample supply of avocados on the European market. "Everyone knew there would be a lot of trading. There are also large volumes coming onto the market from Peru. South Africa is now putting the brakes on their supply. But, overall, there will be a sufficient supply of avocado available in the coming months. This is not surprising. We have an on-year in South Africa and Peru this year. This means larger volumes for the European market", says Nico Spruijt, Product Manager at the Dutch produce wholesaler, Yex.

"The high prices of earlier this year are, for now, a thing of the past. At the moment, prices for unripened Hass avocado, in size 18-20, are at around the EUR12,50 level. The smaller sizes are slightly cheaper and the larger sizes a bit more expensive. Currently, there is still a limited supply of large sizes. These will become more available in the coming weeks", expects Nico. "We have to wait and see which sizes are actually sent. I am not worried. Sales will continue to be good throughout the summer. The European market, for, in particular, ready-to-eat avocado is growing rapidly. It will be no different this summer."
